SHIP's Galley II - Soup Kitchen
Every Tuesday and Thursday, Doors Open 12:30 p.m.
S.H.I.P. (Samaritan Homeless Interim Program) sponsors the SHIP's Galley II lunch at United Reformed Church every Tuesday and Thursday in Fellowship Hall. Anyone in need of a nutritious meal is welcome. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Established in the fall of 1992, Ship's Galley is a service provided by the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program as a response to the increase in need for an on-site meal program to feed the hungry in our region. It is operated through the efforts of faith communities and other volunteers, whose purpose it is to provide a nutritious meal to any person in need regardless of age, race, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, residence, income level or any other qualification. SHIP's "open door" policy means that anyone is welcome to partake of this service. It is SHIP's policy to provide:
- a meal to anyone who is hungry
- a meal free of charge
- respect the guest's anonymity
- the meal in a friendly atmosphere
- treat the guests with dignity
For many years, SHIP has served SHIP's Galley I every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church, located on High Street in Somerville. In 2016, United proudly opened it's doors (and hearts) to provide this service to the community on Tuesdays and Thursdays, giving the community access to a nutritious meal 5 days per week. The program is staffed by volunteers from area faith based communities and caring individuals. Food items are donated by participating faith communities, schools and other organizations. Volunteers cook, prepare, serve and clean up after the meals are served.
